“SCAREY RACING” and how it all began:
After being a big fan of short oval racing for more years than I care to remember our first venture into actual racing was in 2004 when my wife, Maria said she would like to take part in a ladies Banger race. I promptly got hold of a friend’s old Astra estate and borrowed all of the safety equipment etc from friends and away she went for her evening of racing, crashing and bashing
The next year although I’d always said, “I’d love to race but not in the Bangers” I was finally talked (bullied) into having a go and again via a friend obtained an old Ford Sierra. After many hours stripping, equipping and painting the car, I booked in with Spedeworth International as a temporary driver for one evening. After those first few laps I was hooked, so after a few more temp evenings in 2006 I licensed with Spedeworth as Banger 411.Also during 2006 my 2nd son Chris decided he would like to “have a go” so with a small stock of cars now built up ready for me to wreck we prepared one for him and soon after his 16th birthday came the moment of truth, he too fell in love with the thrill of racing.
In 2007 with me still licensed as 411 and Chris regularly using the temp number 725 and the racing getting progressively rougher, it became harder to obtain and find the time to prepare the amount of cars required to race regularly. So the decision was made that we should try some non-contact racing. I bought a second-hand Rookie Rod, a formula for 1200cc Vauxhall Nova’s and 1300cc Ford Fiesta’s with a minimum of modifications from standard, which race at all Spedeworth tracks. Soon after my purchase Chris bought a used Junior Rod from Ringwood Raceway which has now been converted to Euro Rod spec, a similar formula but for any car up to 1400cc and promoted by Rolling Thunder Show at Arena Essex Raceway.
2008 will be our first full season in these new cars although I did manage 2 meetings at the end of 2007 season. I’m sure we won’t win too much in our first year but will continue to enjoy the racing and entertain the spectators and would like to thank our sponsors for the support given which is always appreciated.
